Beginner Guitar and Music Theory

(8 classes 2.5 hours)
We have combined guitar and theory class and made the classes longer which gives the teacher more time to help each student and gives the student more in class practice time. Brian Buchman makes learning fundamentals fun. Get a complete view of chords, rhythm, knowing the notes, proper techniques, understanding the instrument, along with cool exercises and melodies. You will be playing and sounding good quickly. Music theory is a something serious musicians understand. Teacher Brian Buchman will get you to understand the notes & how they relate,what are sharps and flats, key signatures, time signatures, and more. Brian keeps it fun, interesting and not too complicated!
This is recommended for students age 10 or above.

Professional experience:
In addition to the years spent in weekly guitar lessons with Bruce Holzman and Dr. Stephen Robinson, Brian has actively sought out instruction from the top names in classical guitar music. Brian has repeatedly performed in the master classes of, and taken guitar lessons with:
Pepe Romero, Eliot Fisk, Oscar Giglia, Manuel Barrueco, Roland Dyens, Leo Brouwer, Sergio and Odair Assad, Scott Tennant, Andrew York, Adam Holzman, and many, many more.
Between the years of 2003 and 2006 Brian taught an average of 70 (seventy) guitar lessons each week in addition to numerous classes in music theory, sight singing/ear training and group guitar.
Brevard Community College. Cocoa, Florida. August 2002- December 15, 2006. Adjunct professor. Classes taught: Fundamentals of Music Theory, Music Theory I, Sight Singing and Ear Training I, Class Guitar, Applied Guitar Lessons.
Seminole Community College, Sanford, Florida. August 2005 – December 15, 2006. Adjunct professor. Classes taught: Class Guitar I, Class Guitar II, Guitar Ensemble, Fundamentals of Music Theory, Applied Guitar Lessons, and Class Guitar for the Community Education Program grades 3-5.
Jay Michaels Instruments. Melbourne, Florida. August 2003 – December 15, 2006. Head Guitar Instructor. Studio of 35-40 students per semester. Responsibilities include Developing a standard curriculum for the Music School and hiring guitar teachers, basic administrative duties.
Mason School of Music. Tallahassee, Florida. May 1999-December 2001. Music teacher. Studio of 30-40 students per semester. Responsibilities included: Applied guitar and electric bass lessons, instructor in the music theory lab, directed ensemble classes.
Stetson Community School, Deland Florida. January 1997 to May 1998. Guitar teacher. Maintained a studio of five to ten students per semester.
Additional professional activities
Fall and Spring Semester : Rehearsed the SCC Guitar Ensemble and gave public performances each semester.
Performed with the faculty jazz ensemble “Divine Flow”.
Summer 2005: Received full scholarship and performed at Stetson International Guitar Summer Workshop.
Fall semester 2004: Received grant from Florida Arts Council to bring Dr. Stephen Robinson to Brevard Community College for a concert and master class.
Summer 2003: Received full scholarship and performed at Stetson International Guitar Summer Workshop.
Spring semester 2003: Organized a four day classical guitar workshop for the local community. The event was sponsored by Brevard Community College. Activities included: Solo and ensemble concerts given by FSU doctoral students, a lecture on guitar construction given by local luthier Jay MacDonald, and a lecture on the history of the classical guitar repertoire given by myself.
Fall semester 2003: Brought Dr. Eladio Scharron (guitar professor at University of Central Florida) to Brevard Community College for a concert and a master class. Performed at the 2003 Columbus International Guitar Workshop, Columbus, GA.
Fall and Spring 2002: Spent the year living in Florence, Italy. Audited monthly guitar lessons given by Roland Dyens at Conservatoire International de Music de Paris. Lived in Granada, Spain for one month taking flamenco guitar lessons.
Fall semester 2001: First prize winner at the Columbus International Guitar festival.
Fall semester 2000: Awarded a chair in the Guitar Foundation of America’s U.S./Mexico guitar orchestra. Performance at the GFA festival in San Antonio, Texas.
Professional memberships
Co-founder and President of the Space Coast Guitar society, January 2005- August 2006. Duties include developing a charter for the organization. Planning a six month curriculum for our monthly meetings. Booking performances, directing an ensemble, and giving a fifty minute lecture/recital at each meeting.
