The big difference between a guitar player that knows what they're doing and one who doesn't is that one is a musician and the other is not. Ouch, babe. One knows what they are "saying" with their instrument and deciding what to say as they do it. The other is connecting the dots and following a series of memorized "moves". What if you learned phrases in a different language but were never told what you were saying? That could be scary!
Numbers or Notes?

What is that you're playing? A seven? A five? Well that depends on whether you're talking intervals or fret numbers. Please don't call the note on the 8th fret an "eight"! Figure out what note it is. Many guitar players don't have much of a clue what note they're playing, let alone what an interval is. This is because the majority of people who play the guitar began when a friend showed them how to play something - like Iron Man or Smoke On The Water - it's funny that those two songs remain the most common first riffs that kids still play today. So, as opposed to learning a band instrument like the clarinet or an orchestral instrument like the cello and reading music from day one, guitar players absorb riffs, licks and tricks from a variety of other players and sources. They memorize patterns and chord shapes and practice copying famous players. So what's the problem? In many cases, there is no problem. In all honesty, there are plenty of successful players who don't necessarily know what their doing. They write their own songs and call the shots in their bands. Their limitations as a musician do not become apparent because they stay out of the musical situations where they would. What types of situations would those be? I'm glad you asked! How about a real opportunity to teach guitar? You can't teach someone if you don't know the theory supporting the music. You'd have to pass on that. Think about whether there are any English language professors who don't know a verb from a pronoun. The answer is no. How about a gig playing a studio musician? Don't know the chords in the key and what a I-V-vi-IV change is? When the producer says "Go to the five", will you look up at the ceiling? You'll have to pass that one up too. Finally, how about the confidence to play with other musicians no matter where or when those opportunities come up? How about being able to hold a conversation with the keyboard player in the Church band (usually the leader) and not have to hunt for the right chords and notes by ear? How about leading the band? Personally, in the almost thirty years that I've played the guitar, about half has been from from the perspective of a musician. Sometimes pride or praise can hold you back from learning. When you know why something works, you can decide to use it whenever you want. No key change can hold you back. You can put the Mission Impossible lick in any solo! You can change a Metallica riff from minor to major and have the beginning to a completely new song! There is never an end to what you can learn about music; rules and theories, how to break them etc... The bottom line is that, from the position of expression, the more you know what you can say - your musical vocabulary - the better you'll express yourself with confidence and truly enjoy it.

Link Up & Be In The Loop!

A near capacity audience - incredible for a Sunday afternoon - was in attendance. Perfect Fifth is a group of five young and talented musicians who have been studying their instruments at American Rock School. The band is Samantha Matras- Vocals/acoustic guitar, Jake Biller - guitar, Dylan Thompson - guitar, Alex Sanches, Adam Woodward - bass. Gaspar's owner, Shere Shiller said "We are all still talking about how wonderful last night's performance was...what fun!!!" As yourself these questions:

1. Do you own/run a music lesson studio?
2. Do you have all the students that you want?
3. Do you have a recognized brand name and logo?
4. Do you wish that you could grow your business but can't afford to "risk" it?

We're with you.

Becoming an affiliate with American Rock School makes a lot of sense:

1. Branding & Recognition

Face it: cool sells. We advertise on the radio, print, and participate in large events such as NBT at the Ford Amphitheater. Which drive traffic to our website and phones. We already have people from the greater Tampa Bay Area making the drive to our 2 Tampa locations because they know who we are and want to be a part of it. We provide you with ARS welcome kits for all your students. They get the shirts, wristbands, picks, folders and more.

2. Respect in Numbers

An American Rock School affiliate is an advantage over a single owner/operated studio because you have the power of a time tested and solid policy that customers won't be inclined to haggle with.

3. Regional Marketing

This could be number one. We already market in the area more than anyone else doing something similar. We are on the radio, ranked in the top on web searches, rated "A" with the BBB, and in many school planners and yearbooks. If our brand is your brand, calling us is calling you.

4. Training

Students can expect the same quality of instruction from any of the American Rock Schools. Your current instructors will get the same training that we give ours with the focus on retention, versatility, and practicality. We will screen future instructors with our perfected entry exam to make sure that the right person is hired.

5. Management and Schedule Systems

This is one of the least talked about and most important aspects of you business. Phone answering and email responding is key to growing your business. That is why we are handling it for you up front. We collect all the info up front and send it to you so you can set them up right away.

Maybe you've noticed. We're making changes. Over the
next few months, you will see and join us in more.
Our goal is to not only be the best & coolest music location
in Tampa, but the universe! Or, more realistically, the USA, hence
the name. Glad to have you with us.

Keep It In Shape

Like people, instruments have moods; good days and bad days. The condition of your instrument lends itself to the likelihood of how often it will be played. Simply put: keep your gear in shape! Some things to do regularly:

change old, rusty strings

tighten loose parts

lower your action (ask how)

fix bad wiring

TUNE it, and keep it clean

If your instrument needs service, tell us!

Happy instruments get played more.

Cancellations and Rescheduling

Cancellations and Rescheduling

It is important to know that we will do our best to be flexible when we are able to. However, not knowing our policy is not a reason that we can make exceptions for it. That is why it is a policy designed to protect the students and teachers and fairness for you and us. Get a coffee and read our policy page sometime soon. If you notice something odd, feel free to bring it to our attention VIA email.
Same day cancellations must be charged and cannot be made-up, here is why:

The lesson time that you set up as a regular day and time is the time slot (30 minutes or hour) that your instructor sets aside for your lesson. That is the time slot that the tuition pays for.
If a student is absent, the instructor still has to be compensated for their time, as it is their livelihood to teach. It's their job. So it is the teacher's time that you reserve with the tuition, NOT a lesson itself.
We do NOT guarantee a make-up time if you are unable to attend at that time.
If you call no later than 48 hours prior to that regular scheduled lesson appointment time, our instructors have agreed to allow a make-up lesson (if available) once a month.
String Lessons with Caroline Sine

both locations

Classically trained voice and strings instructor who can attend to your musical needs.

I am an outgoing individual who you can fully depend on when it comes to receiving lessons. I have a degree in Music Education from the University of South Florida and have received a teaching certification with the Florida Department of Education. During my music career I have worked as a performer for Opera, College woman's choir, mixed advanced chorus, all county orchestra, and college level orchestra. I have been involved with singing for over twelve years and string instruments for sixteen years. I also have worked on back stage technical aspects such as stage management and lighting.

I enjoy teaching and building positive memories with my students and watching them grow and improve. I focus on the positive when it comes to teaching music and look forward to working on creating a personal teaching experience with you. I live in the Largo area but am more than willing to travel to your location.

During Voice Lessons:

I teach Classical, Opera, and musical theater pieces, which can be very enjoyable to learn. With each voice lesson you also get music theory attached to the lesson which is important to teach not only how to sing but understand its concepts. You will learn how to read music and understand it to a level you never thought possible. I want the students to enjoy the lesson and after about 3-6 months I want the student to feel confident, comfortable, and focused. Voice lessons curriculum includes sight reading mixed with rote learning. Rote learning is hearing the song first and then learning each measure or phrase by hearing it and then singing it. Sight reading is important with the music theory aspect of the lesson itself. Learning to read the music will help in the long run.

String Instruments:

With violin, viola, and Cello I teach beginners with Essential Elements booklet along with the Suzuki method and intermediate students learn general and basic music theory with more advanced music materials. The Suzuki method is learning notes using numbers and repetition for memorization skills. I have been using this method for the past year with my recent and current students, and it has been very successful. Intermediate students will also learn, like the vocal students, basic music theory including sight reading, scales, note names, dynamics and other musical terms that are important for musicians to know. I teach not just how to play an instrument but why music is important and what makes it challenging and fun at the same time.

The music theory paperwork will be provided at each lesson by the instructor. Certain music books may be required for students to purchase on or before the first lesson. I usually give parents/students a week or two to purchase books since shipping takes a while. Most importantly I am willing to set up a unique lesson plan that will be tailored to your unique goals and musical experience.
Call to schedule - 813.888.6683

Miles began playing the piano at age four. He took eight years of lessons in the "Suzuki" method which inspired him to play anything he could find. As a drummer for the past 14 years, Miles has played in a variety of groups from country to jazz and metal. Miles has experimented with many instruments including the violin, harmonica, accordian, and he has played the guitar for ten years. He is a student at the International Academy of Design and Technology in Tampa and currently plays in 2 bands. He keeps students motivated and inspired with lots of practical exercises and beats. He relates well to youth because he is youthful and hip to the current music "scene". Miles has a busy schedule, so if there's an open time available, book it! See video.

Dave, Guitar Teacher: I'm a 49 yr old Cleveland boy... been playing 40 yrs. You've really helped me look at some of my chops in a different light. Love your stuff. Especially the "CRAZY/INSANE" licks. Thanks for your lessons Dave! You Rule! Ed, - Ashtabula, Ohio

Rocky, Guitar Teacher: Rocky keeps my son interested and looking forward to his next lesson. — Mr. Gainey, Tampa, FL

David James, Guitar: Chris has enjoyed the 4 (or 5 years…I’ve lost countJ) that he has been a student there at ARS and has developed a true love of playing guitar, and it all started with Dave A. and it will end with David James in June when he heads off to college, hard to believe. Also, Chris has expressed an interest in minoring in music/guitar while in college, if you have a moment can you ask David J. to share anything with him about college music that he may think will be helpful to Chris.

Thanks so much!

Thelecia Johnson

(and in case I didn’t mention it before….love, love, love the new location!)

Osmond, Piano Teacher: We are very happy with lessons at TGS. Osmond adapts to Courtney's learning style and is very patient. — Kathy Dollar, Tampa, FL

Osmond, Piano Teacher: Osmond is teaching me and my 3 sons and we all are very happy with our lessons, having fun and appreciate Osmond's skill and patience.— Karen Reeves, Tampa, FL

Osmond, Piano Teacher: My daughter, Mani has been taking piano lessons from Osmond for the last year. We love him! He makes learning a pleasant experience and she is playing better than ever! He's a master! Thank you Tampa Guitar School and, more importantly, thank you Osmond for being the best teacher in the world!— Christina and Mani, Largo, FL

Steve, Guitar Teacher: I have an awesome time!— Jamie, Tampa, FL

Dave, Guitar Teacher: Dave teaches in a way that I can understand. I have learned quite a bit since I have been coming here.— Lash Oberst, Tampa, FL

Michelle, Voice Teacher: My daughter, Mani was really off key and was having difficulty projecting and breathing. For some reason, she also decided to adopt a strange affected voice too. It was not good. I took her to Tampa Guitar School and signed her up for voice lessons with Michelle. With just a few lessons, she's singing in tune! A few more lessons after that and she's dropped the strange voice. Michelle has helped her tremendously. I highly recommend voice lessons with Michelle! My ears are now not assaulted and Mani is very happy that I was honest with her and helped her to get the help she needed.— Christina and Mani, Largo, FL

Dave A. - guitar teacher: Excellent lessons! Keep it up dude!! -Phil T.

Thanks for having the coolest lessons around! - KasbekMusik

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What will you teach me that I can't learn on my own?
A: Great question! The short answer is that a professional music instructor will coach you on technique, which is paramount (something a dvd can't do), keep you motivated and excited about music, expose you to many styles and teach you how to read music, tablature, to understand music theory and more. Just like golf, investing and exercise, getting your information and technique tips from a pro is always the best choice in any situation. If you don't understand something, just ask!

Q: How much should I practice?
A: Instead of "practice" let's call it PLAY. Obviously, the more you play; (what your teacher tells you to play) the faster you will notice improvement.
On average, one should play at least 20 minutes a day. But there is no time limit. Motivation to play comes from the desire to play something well. Be patient with yourself!

Q: Do I need a book?
A: Probably. If so, your teacher will recommend one or two. We have several available
here or at Guitar Center. Keep all your materials neat and bring them for each lesson.

Q: If I haven't practiced, should I come in for my lesson?
A: Absolutely! You must keep your momentum and get back on track.

Q: When do I pay for the lessons?
A: On the last paid lesson for the month.

Q: How often are lessons?
A: Once a week at the same time, usually 30 minutes.

Q: If I don't like my teacher, should I switch to another?
A: While we hope that you like the instructor, sometimes there might be a better match with a different one. Teachers are not offended by this and actually encourage it if it helps you to learn and grow.

Q: Do you recommend thirty minutes or an hour lesson?A: Most students can achieve enough direction and instruction in thirty minutes. More advanced players may gain more from an hour lesson.

Q: What is the cancellation policy?
A: You must inform us 48 Hours prior to the expected absence and we will offer you a make-up time if there's one available. In the event of travel, we can arrange to do the missed lesson before you leave or on the week of your return.

Q: Do I need an instrument?
A: Yes. You need something to practice on at home.
If you want a recommendation, ask.

Q: How long does it take to get good?
A: Exactly 7 months, 1 week, 3 days and 6.25 hours — just kidding!!! This is a tricky question because everyone's opinion of "good" is different. The more you practice, the faster you (and others) will notice improvement. It is important to remember that music is an art form, not a competition like golf. There are certain basics that one should learn and fully understand. Once that is achieved, more complicated material will be easier to comprehend. To actually play it will take practice, more for some and less for others.

Q: Will you come to our house to teach?
A: Maybe. Call 888-6683 to check availability and rates.

Q: What geographical areas to you service?
A: We will provide lessons to students from Town & Country, South Tampa, New Tampa, Tampa Palms, Carrolwood, Westchase, Waterchase, Temple Terrace, Hyde Park and others.

About Tampa Guitar School

We've taught over 30,000 music lessons!

Why learn here? Good question. Aside from having the coolest instructors, we're local and we support the local community.
